Spring Hill Missionary Baptist Church was founded around 1844 upon land donated by the Ross family.  Members of the Dixon, Ross, and Wilson families comprised the early membership of the Church.  Spring Hill has occupied four sanctuaries since its inception:  the first was a wooden structure which was destroyed by a storm; the second was also a wooden structure which simply “wore out” over time; the third was a cinder block building which was destroyed by fire in 1983; the current structure was erected and dedicated in 1984 under the leadership of Rev. Harvey Gillis.  Under the leadership of Rev. Robert A. Kelly, the current sanctuary was expanded to include a Pastor’s Study, a handicap accessible bathroom, classrooms, and a conference room.  These additions were completed in 2009.

Rev. Mallory Wright, Rev. Otto Smith, Rev. Edward Jenkins, Rev. Joseph Humphrey, Rev. James Jackson, Rev. M.E. Stubbs, Rev. Harvey Gillis, and Rev. Robert A. Kelly have each served as Pastor of Spring Hill.  Rev. Kelly was installed as Pastor July 7, 1985, and served nearly 33 years until his retirement March 17, 2018; his tenure made him the longest serving Pastor of Spring Hill.  At the time of Rev. Kelly’s installation, Spring Hill held services only on the first and third Sundays of each month; we became a stationary Church holding services every Sunday in 1990.  Under the leadership of Rev. Kelly, the following new Ministries were added:  Bible Study Classes; Nursing Home Ministry; Rehabilitation Ministry; Training Classes; Youth Ministry; and New Generation Ministry.  The following new choirs were also birthed:  SHNG Youth Choir; NG Praise Team; Church Choir; and the All-Male Choir.  The Church was able to purchase a Church Van under his leadership as well.

Spring Hill’s sanctuary sustained significant damage when struck by a tornado in October 2018.  As damage was accessed and repairs unfolded, Church Services convened in the Church Fellowship Hall.  Thankfully, the Church was insured as the roof had to be repaired, extensive damage to the Church sanctuary required it to be gutted before repairs could begin, and the Church Steeple was felled and had to be replaced.  All repairs have since been completed and a new fence has been installed.

Our Deacons have included Player Dixon, Dave Dixon, James Dixon, James McDougald, Benjamin Dixon, John Wilson, Charlie Monroe, Alex Mack, Frank Wilson, Baalam McLean, Patrick Monroe, Jack McLean, Elmer Wilson, Gary Kelly, Conrad Kelly, James Kelly, Paul Martin, Larry Moore, Isaiah Kelly, and James Killensworth.

Trustees have included Larry Dixon, Isaiah Kelly, Josephus Shields, Edward Melvin, Eddie Kelly, Robert McLeod, and Albert McCall.

Upon the 2018 retirement of Pastor Kelly, Spring Hill was suddenly faced with having to form its first pastoral search committee in over 33 years.  It began by selecting an Interim Pastor, in the person of Rev. Dr. N.P. Brodie, to ensure continuity and pastoral services as the search unfolded until selection of a Pastor.  Rev. Brodie served as the Interim Pastor for approximately 1½ years.

Steeped in prayer and lead by the Lord, Spring Hill completed its search selecting Rev. Wilhemina D. Baker as its Pastor in August 2019.  In doing so, Spring Hill made history electing its first Female Pastor and simultaneously becoming the first established Church in the 139 year history of the Union Missionary Baptist Association, Inc. to elect a Female as its Pastor.  Rev. Baker began serving as Pastor September 9, 2019 and was officially installed as Pastor in a glorious, spirit-filled, packed service November 10, 2019.

We thank God for sustaining Spring Hill Missionary Baptist Church since its inception and positioning us to serve Him through service to His people.  He has truly brought us from a mighty long way and dwells with us as we continue to teach, preach, and live His Word – in season and out of season.  Individually and collectively, we are standing firm on His Word and growing spiritually as He is yet creating within us a clean heart and renewing a right spirit within us.  Praises and thanksgiving flood our hearts as God’s plan for Spring Hill is manifested, as we heed His call, and glorify His name.  To God be all power, mercy, grace, dominion, and glory for all He is and does!!
